Moviehole (Fall 2000)

by Clint Morris

If you are a fan of TV's Buffy the Vampire Slayer you should have no trouble recognizing the face of Danny Strong. Strong played Jonathan, fellow Sunnydale Highschool student, whose mere episode appearance's were sometimes the highight of the episode. And if you watched recently, you will have seen Danny return to "Buffy" in an episode called "Superstar", only this time the slightly daggy Jonathon was the envy and idol of all Sunnydale.

Strong's other work includes the TV series "Clueless" with Rachel Blanchard, "Pleasantville", and more recently, an independent movie called "Perpetrators of the Crime" with Tori Spelling.

Now, we can see more of Danny than ever, in two new projects. Firstly, the much discussed short film Spoof and on a much larger scale, I Know What You Screamed Last Summer with Julie Benz and Tom Arnold.

Clint Morris got talking with Danny recently...

Clint:Firstly, how was "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" changed your life?

Danny:I think that it has made me more recognizable. People used to come up to me and ask me if I was an actor, and what I had been in. Now when someone comes up to me it's because they know me from Buffy. It's fun.

Clint:Has it lead to more acting work?

Danny:I'm not really sure if it has or not. I never know if casting people watch the show. It certainly hasn't hurt.

Clint:How surprised were you when told that you would be the star, of sorts, of the "Superstar" episode?

Danny:I was blown away, then I was giddy after I read the script. It was so much fun. I finally got to be an action hero. I was really flattered that the producers would do this.

Clint:Of all the episodes you were in, which one is your favourite?

Danny:I'd have to say Superstar - the twins alone made it one hell of a shoot.

Clint:When working on "Buffy", who would we most likely see you hanging around with?

Danny:When Seth (Green)was on the show, it was definetly him. He's a really cool guy and a lot of fun to hang out with. All of them treat me really well. It's a cool group of people.

Clint:Tell me about "Spoof"?

Danny:Spoof is a short film that some friends of mine made. They were sick of seeing people getting deals with these parodies that are going around town, and they were sort of hoping to put an end to it. I can't believe how much attention it has gotten. I did it for fun, and all of a sudden I end up on Good Day LA (that's a morning news show in LA). It's been kind of wild how much attention it has gotten.

Clint:We are going to see you in "I Know What You Screamed Last Summer" - who do you play in it?

Danny:I play the American Pie type character. I spend the entire film trying to lose my virginity. It's very funny and a little poignant (well, maybe not the poignant part).

Clint:Besides being a regular on "Buffy, the readers may recognize you from the TV series "Clueless". What was that like?

Danny:That was great. I worked on it for two seasons, and they would always write really great stuff for me. I was really bummed when the show got cancelled.

Clint:You have worked with a lot of great actors and actresses, who are your favourites?

Danny:I would say Tim Curry and John Lithgow because they were both so kind and generous. It is an unbelievable feeling to have someone you admire be complimentary of your work. Tim Curry actually had the producers write me in to the show. Unfortunately it was cancelled almost immediately. Maybe it was a bad idea on his part.

Clint:What's the possibility of seeing you in "Buffy" again soon?

Danny:I have no idea. No one really tells me anything, so your guess is as good as mine.

Clint:What are you working on at the moment?

Danny:Right now I am trying to get a film made that I wrote, and I am writing another script. Both seem to be going pretty well.

You will be hearing a lot more about Danny here on "Moviehole" in the future, especially with the pending release of his two new films. Oh, and if you haven't discovered this talented actor yet, why not! There's no time like the present.

Thanks to Danny Strong. Thanks to Little Willow.
